Sri Lim Goh Tong, an incredible entrepreneur, was born in Fujian on 28 February 1918. He was 16 when he left school to become the breadwinner in his family. At the time, China was in a state of instability. He decided to move to Malaysia at age 19 to learn Malay and work as a carpenter. He returned from Malaya to China to work as a gardener and earn money. In the following years, he entered into the hardware and scrap metal trading. In the second half of his career, he became wealthy by selling used heavy machinery in response to the demand that arose after Japan’s occupation. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong also tried iron mining, construction and other related industries. He had the idea of building mountain resorts in Cameron Highlands, which would attract both local and foreign tourists. He conducted research on the subject before building the resort. It was a risky plan but he pushed forward regardless of the criticism. He was required to work seven-days-aweek and invest his entire money into the project called Genting. After the construction was complete, the road from Genting to the city was destroyed by severe rainstorms. The road was closed for four months while repairs were made. It opened in May 1971. Genting Highlands continued to be developed for over 30 years. The industry has expanded into other areas such as property, paper production, power generation, oil exploration, cruise boats, and plantations.

Sri Lim Goh Tong had leadership qualities that made him a successful businessman. He was a successful entrepreneur even though he had no formal education. He could not write or speak English, nor Malay. He learned Malay and Cantonese soon. He refused to let language barriers limit his ability to succeed and he was able to secure one of the most important business contracts for the country. He was a visionary leader. As a young man, he took the chance to start a heavy machinery business because of an urgent need in rubber plantations and mines. He later saw the potential of building resorts on top of a hill. He was determined to show that even though it was a risky project, the project could be completed with great success. The next is to be conscientious. It was his never-ending effort that made him successful. Since he was a farmer, he always looked for ways to improve his business. He did not want his business to be neglected when he headed the Genting project. He worked seven days a weeks and travelled endlessly to ensure that everything was progressing positively.

Fourth, social courage. The risk of bankruptcy or failure was not a factor for him. He continued to pursue his project regardless of the financial risks. His friends refused to invest and instead advised him to give up the scheme because they did not see it as being successful. Tan Sri Goh Tong took risks and was not afraid to be bold. He was cautious in his approach. In planning the Genting resort, he went on an exploration expedition, gathering data and information about the terrain, drainage, soils, and other aspects.

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong is a man of discipline. He gets up early to make a list of things to do so that his day can be productive. Punctuality was important to him. He knew when good employees or business partners arrived for their appointment. He never cancels an important appointment for a non-important person. He is also a kind and sympathetic person. He understood that he had to give back to the society.
